What is a Building Inspection?
A licensed building inspector reviews the following types of construction work for quality and ensure that the work meets minimum building code requirements: grading, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, sewer, foundation, roofs, structural integrity, solar PV systems, and other work items regulated by the Building Code.
What is a Planning Inspection?
A planning inspection is different from a building inspection. A city planner inspects fences, front yard landscaping and hardscaping, sheds, signs, and structures to ensure that these items meet zoning regulations.
When Can Construction Work be Done?
You can conduct construction work between the following times. Work outside these hours may result in a stop-work notice and code enforcement action.
- Monday - Friday: from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Saturday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sunday and City observed holidays: No work allowed!

You will need to contact the Public Works Department
at (310) 973-3260 to inspect any work done in the sidewalk, streets,
street curbs, or alleys. An encroachment permit is required before any
work can commence
in the public right-of-way.
