Stop by and watch our new community center being built at the corner of 147th Street and Burin Avenue! If you are not able to come by, you can still watch the progress on the following slide shows:

jhg February 2011 Project Update to City Council
jhg The Big Pour - Construction of the First Deck

The project got underway in July 2010 with a groundbreaking ceremony. That was soon followed by demolition of existing structures and site grading, utility undergrounding, and installation of water services and stormwater facilities. By the end of the year, the building foundation was complete, interior concrete columns had been poured and the first floor masonry walls were being erected. In spite of rain delays in December and January, construction of various elements of the first floor and preparation to build the second floor progressed on time.

When the building is opened in late 2011, the civic center area will have a new 29,000 square foot, three-story building with two levels of indoor programming space. We anticipate that the community will truly enjoy a beautifully appointed center in which to gather, participate in recreational and educational activities, and celebrate special occasions.

Building features will include:

  • Large multi-purpose room with an adjoining kitchen facility and a platform stage, suitable for indoor special events, banquets, conferences, weddings and large gatherings, which can also be divided into two smaller rooms
  • Large lobby/family space
  • Fitness/exercise rooms
  • Computer lab
  • Classroom spaces
  • Outdoor terraces
  • Staff offices
