BUSINESS TAXES, LICENSES & REGULATIONS INFORMATION

The Lawndale Municipal Code (LMC) requires every person engaged in any business operating within the City to be properly licensed, as well as to be in accordance with the standards for Planning (zoning), Building and Fire Safety, and Public Health.

What every business owner should know…

Things to be done:

  • Contact our City's Community Development Department and make sure the zoning is correct for your new business address. Every business must meet zoning requirements to insure that it's business category and site are compatible, before signing any leases or moving in the new location.

  • State Board of Equalization - Sales Tax (Seller's) Permit, if required, click here.

  • Alcoholic Beverage Permit, if required, click here.
  • Contractor's State License, if required, click here.
  • Certificate of Occupancy - Contact our City's Department of Building & Safety.
  • Sign Permit *- Contact our City's Department Planning & Community Development.
  • Complete and bring the Business License Tax Application to the City Hall with a check, cashiers' check, money order or cash. The business license representative will calculate the cost based on the type of business and the number of employees.

After your business tax application has been processed, you will be issued a receipt of business registration (deposit only subject to approval). All business license/tax certificates are issued for a calendar year and expire December 31st of each year.

OPERATING A BUSINESS WITHOUT BUSINESS TAX CERTIFICATE IS A MISDEMEANOR.

If you conduct business under a name other than your full legal name, you will need to file a Fictitious Business name Statement with the County Clerk's Office to ensure that no one else is using it. Once, cleared, the owner is required to print it in a newspaper of a specified circulation, in the area in which the business will be operated (DBA renewal every 5 years).

If you sell almost any product and some services in the State of California, you must apply for a Seller's Permit and pay sales tax. The Seller's Permit allows the Board of Equalization to keep track of your taxable sales.

A new business will need to obtain a Federal Employer ID number, if a partnership, a corporation, or if any employees are hired. A Federal ID Tax Number is not need, if the business has no employees, and is organized as a sole proprietorship. The proprietor's social security number is used to identify the business.

There are two types of payroll taxes: those withheld from employees' pay, and those paid by the employer. Payroll taxes include withholding for Social Security (FICA) taxes, for Medical, State Disability, and Unemployment. Contact your accountant and /or call the California Employment Development Department.

Similar to Federal regulations, no State Tax Number is required if the business has no employees and is a sole proprietorship. Business income is included in the owner's personal income tax forms.
