BEFORE ELECTION DAY

1. Be Informed - Use your Voter Information (Sample Ballot) Pamphlet to study races and issues. Mark the sample ballot page in the pamphlet with your choices as you decide them and refer to it while voting.

2. Consider Voting by Mail - Voting by mail (absentee voting) is a convenient alternative to going to the polling place on election day. Use the application on the back of your Sample Ballot Pamphlet or re-register as a permanent absentee voter. (Application forms are obtainable at the DMV, post offices, libraries and City Hall.)

3. Know Where to Vote - Your polling place is listed on the back of your Sample Ballot Pamphlet. Since your polling place can change for any election, remember to check the pamphlet before every election. You can also locate your polling place on the city's website (www.lawndalecity.org), the county registrar's website (www.lavote.net) or call the City Clerk's Department at City Hall (310-970-3200).

4. Keep Your Registration Current - If you move (even from one apartment to another in the same building), change your name, or wish to change your party affiliation, you must re-register to vote. Failure to properly re-register may result in your ballot not being counted.

ON ELECTION DAY

5. Check In at Your Polling Place - If you moved very recently, have not been able to re-register, and go to the polling place for your new residence.

6. Ready Your Ballot -Enter a voting booth, remove the ballot card from the gray envelope and insert it into the ballot punch machine. If you have difficulty, request assistance.

7. Vote - Line up the punch so that it is pointed directly toward the name of the candidate of your choice. Press the lever to punch the ballot card. If you cannot depress the lever, the punch is not properly aligned; try again, or ask for assistance.

8. Be Careful - Before you punch, confirm that the hole will be made next to the name of your choice. Read the ballot card carefully - depending on the office, you may be allowed to vote for more than one candidate.

9. Review Your Ballot - After voting, remove the ballot card from ballot punch machine and confirm that you punched the card as you intended.

10. Made a Mistake? - If you make a mistake in punching your ballot card, tear it or otherwise deface it, return it to a precinct officer and obtain another ballot card
